Aust Youth Champs Day 3

10 Jan 2015 by Rob Moreton

Variable wind strengths from 6 to 12 knots and 30 degree wind shifts continued to challenge sailors yesterday as predicted. Tactical errors on course choice were punished severely by these conditions. The day reminded sailors to minimise risk and to keep looking for where the pressure was on course (head out of the boat). It became a mental strength exercise with sailors relying on basic training principles to see them through. The jury was also vigilent adding to the mental strain.
4.7’s – Highlights of the day was to see Tassie boys 1,2 4 around the top mark in race 7 with Ryan leading around all but the second mark and holding off strong challenges on the downwind legs, to take the well earnt win from Sam only 2 boat lengths behind and Josh finishing 8th. Josh promptly followed this up will a 5th in the next race. Ben Reid continued to work hard and apart from the last race is showing good improvement and consistant positions. We look forward to seeing him at ASSOC. training back in tassie.
The downer of the day for Sam and the support team was him being DSQ’d after incorrectly performing a penalty dealt out by the jury. Current position are Sam 8, Josh 10 Ryan 12.
RADIAL -Tom’s day was also one of mixed fortune. After posting his worst result in this regatta in the first race of the day he showed excellent mental strength and judgement to make steady improvement throughout the day post an equal best result in the last race.
Well done to all.
Second drops are due after race 9 today.
It is likely we will have only 2 races today followed by the dreaded pack up.
